SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
Water.
The South Essex Waterworks Company supplies
almost the whole of the district. During the year there
were 25,492 services afforded by this Company and in
addition 63 services were connected with the Metropolitan
Water Board's undertaking.
The water supplied by the Companies concerned is
of a high standard and is subject to periodical analyses
by the undertakers. It may be stated for all practical
purposes that the district is served by a piped supply.
Drainage and Sewerage and Sewage Works
Extensions and Closet Accommodation.
In 1930, 64 cesspools were emptied by the Council.
Since that date, 17 cesspools have been connected to
the sewers. 47 earth closets from 41 premises in the
district are also emptied by the Council.
Of the 47 cesspools, 30 are in the northern area of
the district which is not yet sewered, but proposals for
this are under consideration. There are also 14 in the
eastern area where proposals are in hand for further
sewers in connection with the improvement of Dagenham
Road, and the remaining three are on agricultural land.
The Manor Farm Estate, which was drained almost
entirely by cesspools emptied by the owners, has recently
been sewered. 45 of the properties on this estate have
already been connected, whilst facilities are now
available for the remaining properties.
