Dagenham 1935

brother-in-law, living off Romford Road, but within the
last few days had been sold to a person residing in
Dagenham.
A representative of the Ministry of Health visited
the patient in hospital and endeavoured to trace the
history of the birds in question. The Sanitary Inspector
visited the address given and saw the birds and was told
that one of them appeared to sleep most of the time,
one eye was closed as though suffering from a cold, the
other bird was lively. There was no illness in the family
at the time of visit, 17/5/35.
The owner was quite willing to take the birds to the
London Hospital, the two birds were received there on
17/5/35. The complement fixation test was negative,
the test was repeated and again proved negative.
Smallpox.
Smallpox did not occur in Dagenham during 1935.
On several occasions, however, the Medical Officer of
Health was called by general practitioners to see cases
suspected of this disease, but in no instance was the
diagnosis confirmed.
