The provision of massage and remedial exercises
is an essential part of orthopaedic treatment, and in
many cases prolonged treatment of this nature obviates
the necessity for surgical interference.
Light Clinic.
Ultra Violet Ray treatment is carried out during
two sessions a week at both the Becontree and Dagenham
Clinics. It is our practice to hold these clinics from
October to May inclusive. The two new Ultra Violet
Ray lamps purchased in 1935 continue to give
satisfaction and the results obtained are much better
than those when the old type of lamp was in use. This
clinic continues to show very good results, the children
are kept under close observation by the medical staff
and their weights as recorded give proof of the benefits
they confer.
By arrangement with the Essex County Council,
children of school age may be treated, this Council
receiving a per capita payment.
Professional Nursing in the Home.
(a) General.
The Dagenham District Nursing Association is the
only organisation operating in this district. The
figures in the next paragraph will show that its activities
continue to extend. The nurses undertake midwifery
and maternity nursing, and in addition medical and
surgical cases are attended.
A total of 1,136 general nursing cases were treated
during the year, involving 9,909 visits to the homes.
286 midwifery cases and 78 maternity cases were
nursed. In addition, these patients paid a total of
2,027 visits to the ante-natal clinic held at York House.
Altogether then, the number of persons attended during
the year was 1,500 to whom 16,806 visits were paid.
