Social Conditions of Inhabitants.
A large proportion of residents in this area work in districts
outside the Urban District; there are, however, many industries
established in Dagenham, the largest of which is the Ford Motor
Company. During the past year, several manufacturers have
established themselves in Dagenham, and I am informed that
negotiations are in progress by industrialists to acquire sites for
factories. There has been no marked change in the percentage
of employment during the past twelve months.
The continued activity in the building industry employs a
relatively large number of men, but owing to the weather conditions,
employment is often spasmodic.
The Dagenham and Becontree Personal Service Council is now
firmly established, and its activities extend to the whole of the
Becontree housing estate. The number of persons seeking the
advice and assistance of this Council continues to increase. The
Council is fortunate in having secured the interest of many
prominent citizens of the area who continue to evince their interest
in the welfare of their less fortunate fellows.
