There are no Nursing or Maternity Homes in the district, and
considering the facilities available within easy distance of the
district, the necessity for establishing such homes does not appear
to be pressing.
The Minister of Health has, by circular 1433, issued in October,
1034, suggested that new maternity homes should not be established
unless they are in association with general hospitals.
Assisted Milk Scheme.

The expenditure incurred by the Council under the assisted milk scheme for the year was:—

£s.d.
(a) For ordinary milk1,37200
(b) For dried milk24200

Education.
A number of pamphlets are distributed at the Infant Welfare
Centres by the Health Visitors, and members of the medical staff
from time to time address gatherings in the district on matters
pertaining to health.
The institution of birthday cards during 1933 has been
continued, and from time to time direct evidence is received that
the cards and education leaflets which accompany them produce
the effect which was intended. This scheme has received the notice
of other Local Authorities and we have been pleased to co-operate
and send specimens of the literature issued. This scheme is
particularly valuable in a district in which there is constantly
occurring an influx of residents from outside as the opportunity
is taken of acquainting these families with the health services offered
in the district.
As a direct result of birthday cards having been sent out, over
200 children took advantage of the scheme for immunization in the
district.
The Council provisionally decided to hold a Health Week in
1935, but difficulty was met with in finding premises which were
adaptable for the holding of such an event on a scale large enough
to be of value in a district containing the population of Dagenham.
The scheme has been deferred pending the building of a hall which
will suffice.
