Legal Proceedings.
One prosecution was taken during the year against a grocer
who was summoned on two charges for having in his possession
unsound tins of tomatoes and tins of condensed milk intended for
the food of man. The number seized was 119 tins of tomatoes
each weighing 2½ lbs., and 41 tins of condensed milk. The
defendant was fined £10 on each summons or one month's
imprisonment in default.
Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.
This Act came into force on 1st January, 1934. The
requirements affecting this district are briefly as follows :—
(1) Animals to be slaughtered by a mechanically operated
instrument, except where by resolution of the Local
Authority certain animals are exempted.
(2) All slaughtermen must be licensed.
The rest of the Act provides for provisions to be observed as
to slaughterhouses, penalties for contravention of the Act and
inspection of slaughterhouses.
12 slaughtermen were licensed during the year in this area.
Bakehouses.
There are four factory and three retail bakehouses in the
district; to these, 31 visits were paid during the year.
Food Shops.
361 visits were paid to butchers shops, 234 to fish shops, 106
to provision shops, 67 to dairies and milkshops and 34 to greengrocers
shops.
The following amounts of foodstuffs were condemned :—
18 lbs. of sausages—unsound. 2 fowls—unsound. 24 stone of fish.
Ice-Cream.
Section 99 of the Dagenham Urban District Council Act, 1931,
calls for the registration of (a) any person being the manufacturer
of or merchant or dealer in ice-cream or other similar commodity
within the district, and (b) any premises within the district used
or proposed to be used for the manufacture or sale of ice-cream or
other similar commodity.
The additional powers granted under the Essex County Council
Act,1933, to refuse registration or remove from the register are
now in force.
