In view of these increased responsibilities, the Council has approved
the appointment of a second Specialist Food Inspector for this work.
Similarly, the staff employed on the inspection of Offices, Shops and
Railway premises is to be strengthened by the transfer of a Technical
Assistant from Clean Air, primarily for the purpose of concentrating on the
provisions of the Hoists and Lifts Regulations as to maintenance and safety
of hoists and lifts and associated lift motor rooms. It is estimated that there
are 600/700 hoists and lifts in the Borough
In spite of various setbacks the Borough's smoke control programme has
continued and in anticipation of an early completion of the former County
Borough programme, the Council has agreed in principle that smoke control
should be extended to include the southern part of the Borough, formerly the
area of the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council.
During the year three student Public Health Inspectors were successful
in obtaining their final qualification, one of whom was awarded the Bronze
Medal presented by the Municipal Journal Group of Companies.
The Council's policy of training inspectors in this way has been amply
rewarded and is the only means of maintaining the inspectorate at a
reasonable level.
In concluding this introduction to the report, I should like to express
my appreciation for the support and encouragement of the Chairman, ViceChairman
and the members ofthe Health and Public Services Control
Committee, the guidance and confidence of Doctor S.L. Wright, Medical
Officer of Health, and the very willing help and loyalty of the whole of my
staff.
