LONDON BOROUGH OF CROYDON
ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE PRINCIPAL
SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER
FOR THE YEAR
1971
To the Chairman and Members of the Education Committee:
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
This is the seventh Annual Report of the School Health Service of the
London Borough of Croydon, and covers a year in which the number of
school children reached a record high figure of 55,886.
School Medical Inspections
The pattern of routine inspections was unchanged, but due to re-organisation
of secondary schooling the number seen was less than last year.
Special inspections requested by Head Teachers or parents, showed a marked,
and probably compensatory, increase.
Personal Hygiene
More children were examined, explanatory leaflets about infestation
were distributed to parents, and a new treatment preparation introduced. These
efforts were successful in reducing infestation, and are, of course, being
continued. There were fewer cases of scabies, but less success in coping
with plantar warts. Proof of any effective preventive treatment for this latter
condition is still awaited. Meanwhile detection and effective treatment are
the only methods of control.
