CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC
The short stay psychiatric inpatient unit opened last year
at Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton, is proving to be an invaluable
instrument for the diagnostic investigation of the
occasional very severe emotionally disturbed child referred to
the Child Guidance Clinic. The appointment of Dr. A. Zarrabi as
Psychiatric registrar to both the short stay unit and the Child
Guidance Clinic in Croydon has improved integration and followup
between the two organisations. Diminishing pressures on the
adolescent inpatient unit at Long Grove Hospital has enabled us
to secure admissions to it more easily than in previous years.
This means that the Child Guidance Service is not now being
taxed by the very acute serious behaviour disorders, and that we
can plan on methodical lines the treatment of the 'cold' cases.
The Tutorial Class under Mr. G.W. Doe continues to provide
an effective first line of defence against school phobias and we
have had some real successes in the management of this perennial
problem.
An outstanding need which has emerged over the last two
years is that of day facilities for the education of psychotic
children. It is hoped that the next Annual Report will show that
this tragic gap in our service has been finally closed.
