Health Education Open Week at Coombe Cliffe Education Centre.
The help and co-operation of the Education Department was
very much appreciated in allowing facilities at Coombe Cliffe
for a week's health education exhibition and demonstration of
methods and media. This was primarily for junior schools, was a
practical and informal way of stimulating interest among
teachers, and seemed to be enjoyed. Several of them have followed
it up and are now making use of the Health Education Section.
There is still a regular demand from many junior schools for
the two evening sessions on the subject of "Growing Girls" - the
first session for mothers and the second for mothers with
daughters in the fourth year group.
Venereal Diseases
During the evening sessions in junior schools when mothers
only are present, the facts about venereal diseases are given as
simply and clearly as possible They are also discussed at some
point with the groups in secondary schools taking the Community
Health Courses.
Several teachers have come to the Health Department for information
and a demonstration of visual aids on the subject and
are including it in their own courses.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
Because it was felt that resistance to all the publicity and
propaganda was building up in the town, it was decided not to
have a big anti-smoking drive in all the schools for a year..
However, discussion continued during the Community Health
Courses and invitations were received from several youth clubs.
The new film for secondary schools "Smoking and You" was
purchased and will be used during discussion sessions in all
secondary schools, starting again in January.
Parent-Teacher Associations
The health education of children cannot be effective in
isolation - and must be developed with the co-operation and
understanding of parents and teachers. Therefore invitations to
speak at these meetings were always received with pleasure
during the year. A great deal of health education was also
carried out among parents in the mothers' clubs and toddlers'
clinics run by the Health Department staff.
