COUNTY BOROUGH OF CROYDON
ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE PRINCIPAL
SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER
FOR THE YEAR
1963
To the Chairman and Members of the Education Comnittee
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
This is the 60th Annual Report of the work of the Croydon
School Health Service.
Routine Medical Inspections
As recently reported to the Committee, the system of four
routine medical inspections continues, but a pilot scheme of
Questionnaires to parents is to be introduced before some of the
intermediate age group children are to be seen. The results of
these questionnaires will be assessed in the light of the subsequent
findings of the examining School Medical Officer, and
will be the basis of future recommendations. The trend of current
articles on this question of medical inspections indicates that
areas where new systems have been adopted are somewhat less
enthusiastic about their findings, although such experiments
still have firm support by the medical staff of the Ministry of
Education. Some two-thirds of all local Education Authorities
continue the established pattern which is maintained in Croydon,
and I am still convinced that a policy of cautious enquiry into
alternatives rather than immediate wholesale changes should be
Pursued.
