All the children recommended for a hearing aid were seen by
Mr. Parsons, the Corporation's Consultant Otologist, who has
held monthly consultant sessions at the Audiology Clinic throughout
the year. At two of these sessions we. were pleased to welcome
visitors - Dr. Mary Sheridan from the Ministry of Health
and Dr. Huss from the Ministry of Education.
Two conferences were attended by Miss Dimond-Hogg during the
year; a weekend conference in January at Condover Hall, Shrewsbury
on the problems of blind/deaf children, and a five day international
course in June on "Paedo-Audiology" at Groningen
Dniversity, Holland.
In September, an important circular was issued jointly by the
Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to all Local
Health and Education Authorities on "Young Children handicapped
by impaired hearing". With this circular was a memorandum outlining
the services which should be provided, and also a leaflet
giving advice on the use of hearing aids by children. These were
distributed to all who were likely to be concerned with the
problems of deafness in children, including all Head Teachers.
Though there are, of course, still aspects of our audiology
service which will be developed, all the suggestions and
recommendations of the two Ministries are now being carried out
in Croydon.
