BLINDNESS
I am indebted to the Chief Welfare Officer for access to his
records regarding blind persons registered during the year.
These show that of the 97 cases registered:-
9 were due to glaucoma and
50 to cataract.
Of the cases where surgical treatment had been recommended,
subsequent follow-up showed it had either been performed or
would be carried out except:-
3 patients had moved from the borough.
3 patients had died.
NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948, SECTION 47
NATIONAL ASSISTANCE AMENDMENT ACT, 1951
From time to time, and from various sources, information was
received about elderly people, who were thought not to be receiving
adequate care and attention. During the year, visits
were made to the homes of 26 such persons (21 females and 5
males). On only one occasion (a man aged 80 years, who refused
hospital treatment although seriously ill) were compulsory
powers used. A Magistrate's Order was obtained for this patient
and he was removed to Queen's Hospital, where he died a few
weeks later.
