BLINDNESS
I am indebted to the Chief Welfare Officer for access to his
records regarding blind persons registered during the year.
These show that of the 85 cases registered -
11 were due to glaucoma and
27 to cataract.
Of the cases where surgical treatment had been recommended,
subsequent follow-up showed -
3 treatment commenced but not completed
1 admission to hospital being awaited
1 too ill for surgical treatment
1 patient deceased.
PROBLEM FAMILIES
Last year, I set out in some detail the system of co-ordination
which operates in Croydon and mentioned the possible use of
selected home helps to work in families brought forward by health
visitors. This was commenced and 16 cases were visited and
special home help supplied to 7. In 6 cases the home help was
refused, despite the offer to remit the usual cost of the service.
In the remaining cases, the Home Help Supervisor was able to
deal with the problems herself.
Examples of Cases:-
Mrs. A. Husband in regular employment, three children under 5
years of age. Mrs. A. unable to read or write. 105 hours practical
training by a special home help. Family now out of debt with
local trades people and Mrs. A. managing reasonably well.
Mrs. B. Husband in regular employment, four children ages 2 to
13 years. Mrs. B. has been a voluntary patient in a mental hospital.
Reported as apathetic and unresponsive, taking no interest
in her home or domestic responsibilities. Special home help gave
180 hours service and home conditions greatly improved. At first,
Mrs. B. made little response and the home help was finally
withdrawn at the husband's request. Mrs. B. now reported as
pregnant, but taking a great deal more interest in her children
and her home.
Mrs. C. Husband in regular employment, two children ages 6 and
18 months. Case referred by family doctor. Health visitor dealt
with health problems and Home Help Supervisor with debts due to
various hire purchase agreements. Special help for 20 hours only.
Mother felt more secure and able to manage.
