There were 101 inquests held by Coroners in respect of Croydon
residents during 1955, and 380 findings by Coroners after postmortem
without inquest.
Wards with the highest death-rate were South (12.7), Central
(12.2) and Upper Norwood (11.7). Lowest: Addington (4.2), West
Thornton (8.5), East (8.6) and South Norwood (8.7).
Still Births
During 1955, 69 still births were registered in respect of
Croydon. Of these, 35 were male babies and 34 females; 3 males
and 1 female were illegitimate. The proportion of still births
to living children was 1 in 48. The still birth rate was 2.0 per
cent, of the total births. The still birth rate, on the same
basis as for Infant Mortality, was 20.2 per 1, COO births.
