Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour herewith to present my Twentieth Annual
Report upon the Health Services carried out by the Council.
This report is the 48th of the series of these reports.
The population of the town, as estimated by the RegistrarGeneral
was 242,770. Since the cessation of the war the population
has grown rapidly and has now exceeded the pre-war level.
During the year 2,416 marriages were solemnized, an
increase of 311 over 1946. The marriage rate was 11.5 per 1,000
of the population.
The Birth Rate was 21.0 per 1,000, an increase of 0.4 per
1,000 over that for 1946. There were 5,100 live births, of whom
2,615 were males and 2,485 females. Of these approximately
37.97 per cent, were born in hospital, and 25.74 per cent, in
registered maternity homes. There were 283 illegitimate births,
a percentage of 5.5 of the total live births, which shows a further
reduction of 1.0 per cent, below the 1946 figure.
