SMOKE OBSERVATIONS.
During the year 31 observations were made of factory chimneys
for the purpose of detecting offences. In those cases where
nuisance occurred appropriate action was taken to remedy the condition.
To-day there is little choice left to the factory owner
regarding the fuel he uses and this creates a difficult problem in
smoke abatement.
AMUSEMENT HOUSES.
97 inspections were made of Theatres, Music Halls,
Cinemas, Dance Halls, and premises where stage plays are given.
A report is submitted annually to the Licensing Authorities on the
sanitary condition of these premises. Notices are issued to remedy
any unsatisfactory conditions.
DISINFECTION.
The Borough Disinfecting Station is situated at Factory
Lane. Two steam disinfectors are in use and are supplied with
steam from the Electricity Works.
The following articles were disinfected at the Disinfecting
Station during the year:—

In addition 465 articles were destroyed on request.
Disinfection of bedding and upholstered articles is carried out
for traders, who deliver them to and collect them from the Station.
For this service a charge is made. During 1945, 2,969 articles
were disinfected, the receipts amounting to £55 7s. 6d.

Disinfection of the under-mentioned articles from such premises as A.R.P. report centres; casualty services; engineers' services; fire service, etc., have been carried out:—
