try keepers' premises. This could be reduced by raising sheds at
least 9in. off the ground and the removal of unconsumed food and
water in the evening. We have byelaws in force to control the
nuisance from dogs fouling footpaths and the nuisance of the
noisy animal—both byelaws difficult to apply and yet both
unnecessary if only people would carry into "the peace" the
neighbourliness they showed during the War.
OFFENSIVE TRADES.
There are but few registered and during the year there has
been no cause for complaint.
WATERCOURSES, PONDS AND DITCHES, Etc.
71 inspections were made and pollutions were found in 7
cases. Observation is also kept on static water tanks for evidence
of nuisance or mosquito breeding.
SMOKE OBSERVATIONS.
During the year 14 observations were made of factory chimneys
for the purpose of detecting offences. In those cases where
nuisance occurred appropriate action was taken to remedy the condition.
To-day there is little choice left to the factory owner
regarding the fuel he uses and this creates a difficult problem in
smoke abatement.
AMUSEMENT HOUSES.
109 inspections were made of Theatres, Music Halls,
Cinemas, Dance Halls, and premises where stage plays are given.
A report is submitted annually to the Licensing Authorities on the
sanitary condition of these premises. Notices are issued to remedy
any unsatisfactory conditions.
DISINFECTION.
The Borough Disinfecting Station is situated at Factory
Lane. Two steam disinfectors are in use and are supplied with
steam from the Electricity Works. The Station was badly
damaged during the year by enemy action but the steam disinfectors
were usable and work was continued with little break.
