SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES.
To the Medical Officer of Health.
I beg to submit a report for the year ending the 31st December,
1944, of the work of the Sanitary Inspectors and other officers
under my supervision. Reports during the war years have, of
necessity, been much curtailed, but I think space can here be found
for an appreciation of the efforts of the staff during this most
trying year. From the middle of June onwards working conditions
in the Borough were abnormal, starting with the 10 weeks
of almost incessant day and night attacks from the enemy's
"flying bomb," followed by the aftermath of destruction, and
the consequent curtailment of building works other than those
licensed as most urgent. All this meant extra work in the
department and yet the normal essential duties of food inspection
and sampling, infectious disease enquiries, disinfection, drainage
and other complaints had to receive attention. The text of the
report sets out fully the work done.
GEO. GRIEVE,
Acting Chief Sanitary Inspector.
