used the Reference Book of Physical Training as a source of
material. Junior Departments have a daily lesson in Physicai
Training; Senior Departments do not achieve this owing to the
longer period of the lessons. All Senior Departments and Selective
Central Schools, with the exception of two Non-Provided Schools,
have now at least one teacher who has had special training in the
use of portable apparatus. Every such Department is equipped
with apparatus and the equipment of Junior Schools on lines
suggested by the 1933 Syllabus is now complete.
Many teachers attended special courses in Physical Training,
Sword and Morris Dancing, Swimming, and other forms of physical
activity.
The past year was the most successful in the history of the
Borough so far as swimming was concerned. The teams representing
Croydon gained many successes in the London Swimming
Association's Galas. These successes only emphasise the good work
done in all Senior and Junior Departments. The number of
beginners' certificates gained remains at a high level. The accommodation
at the Baths is now fully utilised. With the present
facilities for teaching swimming, very little further advance is
possible.
During the year shoes have been provided to all Departments
for the use of those children whose financial circumstances made
it impossible for them to provide their own footgear.
Additional playing field facilities have been obtained in the
Kingsley area. This supplies a long-felt need in that particular
district.
Nearly every Department holds its own Sports Day and its
own Swimming Gala, when parents have an opportunity of seeing
the results of the physical work done in the Schools.
The Croydon Schools' Athletic Association has continued its
excellent work. Inter-School competitions in cricket, football,
boxing, swimming, and general athletics have been carried on
throughout the year. Parties for Country Dancing and Sword and
Morris Dancing have also been arranged.
The organisation and supervision of these inter-school activities
are undertaken by the teachers voluntarily in their own free time
and is worthy of the highest praise.
