The 308 samples taken under the Milk and Dairies (Consolidation)
Act, 1915, were samples of milk which had been produced
in the following areas:—
Table XYII.
Areas. | No. obtained. | No. Tuberculous. |
---|---|---|
Croydon | 14 | 1 |
Kent | 14 | 1 |
Surrey | 6 | 1 |
Sussex | 44 | 5 |
Somerset | 2 | — |
*Unclassified | 228 | — |
Totals | 308 | 8 |
*These samples could not be classified owing to the fact that
it was mixed milk of large dairy firms or wholesale
purveyors of milk, who obtain their milk from practically
all the areas mentioned in the above Table.
FOOD AND DRUGS (ADULTERATION) ACT, 1928.
During the year 371 samples of milk (370 new, 1 condensed)
and 478 other samples were taken.
In 5 instances the vendors were warned.
19 samples of Ice Cream were taken during the year. The
Public Analyst reports that 5 of these samples contained fat in
amounts varying from 1.8 per cent, to 9.1 per cent., 10 contained
fat in amounts varying from 10.0 per cent, to 16.7 per cent., and
4 had little or no fat content derived from milk.
There is no legal standard for fat in Ice Cream. 10 per cent,
is stiggested as a reasonable minimum amount. Bearing in mind
this figure, it will be seen that the majority of the samples of Ice
Cream were above this suggested standard.
