The rate of infantile mortality for England and Wales in
1937 was 58, and for the 125 large towns 62. The rate for
Croydon is therefore higher than the average rate. This is very
unusual, as the Croydon rate has been for many years lower than
the general rate. An exceptionally large number of deaths from
