The average daily number of beds occupied amounted to 92.3,
as compared with 65.4 for the previous year.

Mixed Infection.
28 cases on admission to the Borough Hospital were found to
shew evidence of concurrent infection:—
2 had scarlet fever and diphtheria.
2 ,, mumps and diphtheria.
6 ,, whooping cough and diphtheria.
1 ,, scarlet fever and diphtheria and mumps.
6 ,, chicken pox and scarlet fever.
3 ,, scarlet fever and measles.
3 ,, scarlet fever and German measles.
2 ,, scarlet fever and mumps.
2 ,, scarlet fever and whooping cough.
1 ,, rubella and whooping cough
Cross Infection.
8 cases developed a second disease subsequent to admission to
the Borough Hospital, i.e., 6 cases of scarlet fever developed
chicken pox, 2 cases of diphtheria developed mumps.
Health of Staff at Borough Hospital.
The following illnesses occurred amongst the Staff:—
Scarlet fever, 1; diphtheria, 3. All the cases recovered.
Schick Test.
This test was applied throughout the year to the nursing and
domestic staffs, with a view to ascertaining those susceptible to
diphtheria, and preventing their employment in diphtheria wards
until immunised by treatmeant with toxin-antitoxin. 34 Schick
tests were performed; 9 were positive, and these persons were
treated by toxin-antitoxin.
