PHYSICALLY DEFECTIVE CHILDREN.
The school of 40 places for physically defective children in
Winterbourne Road has been full throughout the year. The
special manual type of instruction has been successfully in operation.
Hot mid-day meals, cooked on the premises, are provided
for the children. During the warmer months most of the day is
spent in the open-air, so that the children have great opportunities
of physical and mental improvement. Miss Batson and a voluntary
trained helper, Miss Voss, attend for a total of four sessions
a week to give massage and remedial exercises for individual
children.
All the children suffering from crippling conditions have been
examined and advised by the orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital
Clinic.
NURSERY SCHOOLS.
No Nursery Schools have been established in the Borough.
CENTRAL SCHOOLS.
Medical inspection at the Central Schools (John Ruskin
School for Bovs and Lady Edridge School for Girls) have continued
as in previous years, the children at these schools being
subjected to annual examination.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
The pupils at the Selhurst Grammar School for Boys, the
Selhurst Grammar School for Girls, and the Old Palace Girls'
School were medically examined during 1926, the examination of
girls being carried out by women medical officers.
874 pupils at secondary schools underwent routine medical
inspection during the year. In addition, 178 children were reexamined
for defects noted at previous visits.
The results of medical inspection are set out in the tables
dealing with secondary schools at the end of this report. It will
be seen that 5.0 per cent. of those undergoing routine inspection
were referred for treatment for defective eyesight; 0.7 per cent.
for anremia; and 5.0 per cent. for spinal curvature.
In all 12.8 per cent. of those seen as routine cases were found
to require treatment for one or more physical defects.
