formerly, owing to difficulties of organisation, were only able
to obtain three lessons per week. Where these difficulties
still exist it is hoped that, by careful arrangement, the ideal
of a daily period may be achieved.
(ii) Two Courses for men teachers have been held during
the past school year. The first Course was held at the Selhurst
Grammar School for Boys from 14th to 25th June. Twentyfour
teachers from the Croydon Elementary Schools attended
this Course, one representative coming from each Boys'
Department. The Course was held in the mornings, from
9.15 to 12 noon, and consisted of work suitable for boys'
classes and following the lines of the Board of Education's
Syllabus of Physical Training.
The second Course was held in the Welcome Hall, Scarbrook
Road, Croydon, from 15th to 26th November. Twenty
teachers attended and, although there were four less in attendance
than at the first Course, the practical result is that two
representatives from the large majority of the Boys' Departments
of the Croydon Schools have had a more extended
opportunity of considering the best methods of pursuing the
work of physical training, and where uniformity of practice
is desirable this has been achieved.
(iii) In the last report reference was made to the possibilities
of providing recreative activities and simple sports
events suitable for the school playground. A list of such
simple activities, together with some simple playground
games, was considered at the Courses mentioned above. It
was welcomed with great interest and has been found the
means of giving much more variety to the ordinary physical
training lesson.
(iv) Football in Boys' Schools continues to aim at an
educative influence in the school life. The six competitive
events mentioned in the last report continue to be the basis
of many struggles before the winning team in each competition
is "ound.
In the Croydon Schools' Charitv Cup Competition
attendance at the match provided the sum of £70, which was
handed over to the Hospitals and certain Juvenile Organisation
Committees.
