The following are details of children treated at the Massage
Section of the clinic:—
Infantile paralysis 25
Hemiplegia 8
Other paralysis 4
Club-foot 6
Tubercular joints (quiescent), with
wasting 5
Rickets and general malnutrition 10
In addition a considerable number of the children suffering
from spinal curvature or flat-foot have had massage as a part of
the general treatment.
Beyond the remedial exercises and massage given at the
clinics named above, a regular course of massage and remedial
exercises has been given three times a week at the school for physically
defective children in Winterbourne Road. Through the
kind help of Miss Voss, whose trained aid has been greatly appreciated,
the number of sessions during the later part of the year
were increased to five per week.
(2) Through Public Health Committee.—A massage and
remedial exercises clinic for children under 5 is provided by
the Public Health Committee at the Lodge Road Clinic. Here
again, to avoid so far as possible duplication with the Hospital
clinic, only the slighter cases are treated, not needing special
apparatus for treatment.
(3) Through the Croydon General Hospital.—Clinics for
massage and remedial exercises, and for electrical treatment,
are provided at the Croydon General Hospital, and work in
association with the Orthopedic Clinic. Treatment is provided
on the same basis of payment as for the Orthopedic
Clinic, and the more severe cases of deformity or defect are
referred to the Hospital for such treatment.
C.—Treatment in Institutions.
Suitable cases are sent, through the Orthopedic Clinic, to the
St. Nicholas and St. Martin Orthopedic Hospital, Pyrford, where
prolonged treatment is needed; others requiring short periods of
treatment are admitted to the Croydon General Hospital under
