During the year 286 children underwent operation at the
clinic on account of enlarged tonsils or of adenoids.
258 children attended the breathers' class during the year,
nearly all of whom had undergone operations for tonsils and
adenoids at the throat clinic or at various London Hospitals some
two weeks before admission to the class.
In addition a number of children underwent breathing exercises
before operation, in accordance with a routine authorised by
the Committee during the course of the year.
(c) Tuberculosis.
All children in whom the presence of tuberculosis is
suspected are referred to the tuberculosis dispensary for further
examination, and for such advice, treatment or continued observation
as may be appropriate.
The total number of attendances at the tuberculosis dispensary
by children of school age was 3,964.
(d) Vision and External Eye Diseases.
The Eye Clinic was held throughout the year at Lodge Road.
The clinic is held on two mornings each week, and is conducted
by a part-time ophthalmic specialist, with the assistance of one
of the health visitors as nurse.
624 children underwent a refraction test during the year at
the Eye Clinic, and in 489 of these spectacles were prescribed.
500 obtained spectacles under the Committee's scheme during the
course of the year, the excess of spectacles provided over those
prescribed being due to duplication in a few cases where children
broke their glasses. In addition, 4 children underwent examination
at the Eye Clinic and received advice for other defects or
diseases of the eye.
