(c) Enlarged Tonsils and Adenoids.
Of the children examined during routine inspection, 609 (7.2
per cent.) had enlarged tonsils and adenoids requiring treatment,
while 895 (10.7 per cent.) were affected in slighter degree.
(f) Lymphatic Glands.
In 31 children, seen as routine cases, the cervical glands were
enlarged to an extent needing treatment, while in 330 other cases
the children were kept under observation.
(g) Dental Disease.
848 children (10.1 per cent.) were referred for treatment on
account of dental decay. An accurate picture of the prevalence of
dental caries among school children can be obtained by reference
to the section of the report dealing with dental treatment.
(h) Heart and Circulation.
13 children were found to be in need of treatment for organic
heart disease; and 123 were under observation for heart disease
which had reahed a stage of equilibrium.
58 children, or 0.7 per cent. were referred for treatment on
account of anaemia.
(i) Diseases of the Lungs (non-tuberculous) were in 22 children
(0.3 per cent.) found sufficiently marked to need treatment.
(f) Tuberculosis.
Apart from 2 cases of suspected tuberculosis of the lungs, one
case of tuberculosis of the skin and one of joint tuberculosis, referred
for treatment, the great majority of the cases traced were
those of glandular tuberculosis. 37 cases (0.4per cent.) were referred
for treatment, and 50 (0.6 per cent.) for further observation.
(k) Deformities.
224 cases (or 2.7 per cent.) of spinal curvature were found
during routine medical inspection and were referred for treatment,
and 408 slighter cases (4.8 per cent.) were noted for further
observation. The attendance of children with spinal curvature
at the Remedial Exercises Clinic, and at the special corrective
classes at four schools has been a large factor in the increase in
the proportion of those children traced and treated at an earlier
stage in the condition than previously.
