JUVENILE EMPLOYMENT.
Enquiries as to employment were made as in former years and
where necessary, cases have been reported to the officer responsible for
action under the Children's Act, 1903. The conditions arising out of
the War do not appear to have influenced the employment of children
in Croydon to any appreciable extent.
MENTAL DEFICIENCY.
At the end of 1915 there were 144 cases of mental deficiency
known in the borough. Of these 75 cases were under the age of 16
years and within the purview of the Education Committee. These
cases consisted of 44 males and 31 females—one of each sex having
died during the year, the nett numbers are 43 males and 30 females.
GRANGEWOOD SPECIAL CLASS.
The following summary shows the number of children taught at
this class during the year:—

THE WORK OF THE OPHTHALMIC SURGEON.
The reference of cases of defective vision has been made to the
Ophthalmic Surgeon as heretofore. Mr. Wray has also made special
visits to schools to examine for himself particular cases of optical
defect in children.
The number of refractions done in 1915 was 578; in 1914 the
number was 490.
The total number of children examined for eye trouble in 191 5
was 863, as contrasted with 749 in 1914.
The following is a summary of the cases seen in the eye clinic at
the Town Hall :—
