TONSILS AND ADENOIDS.
Tonsils were markedly enlarged in 332 cases, and slightly in 755.
456 children were found to have adenoids.
Some difficulty has been experienced in getting operative treatment
for cases of tonsils and adenoids, owing to the staffing difficulties at the
General Hospital. For the same reason it is not this year possible to say
how many such school children have been operated upon at Croydon
General Hospital. I am indebted to the honorary staff for largely filling
the breach due to the lack of resident officers.
GLANDS.
Glands were markedly enlarged in 1,080 cases and slightly in 160.
All marked tubercular cases have as heretofore been referred to the
Tuberculosis Dispensary for supervision and treatment.
EAR DISEASE.
This was noted in 11 2 cases, and 265 children suffered from deafness.
Many of these cases were sent to the Treatment Centre.
DEFORMITIES.
Curvature of the spine was found in 104 cases. Other deformities
amounted to 99.
AFFECTIONS OF THE HEART.
Affections of the heart were found in 339 children. General advice was
gi\'en, and where necessary also the leaflet 011 Rheumatic Fever.
LUNG DISEASES.
Affections of the lung were found in 335 cases, Of these : —
155 children had bronchial catarrh,
163 , ,, other conditions of the lung,
17 ,, „ pulmonary tuberculosis.
The cases of phthisis were referred to the Tuberculosis Dispensary.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES.
Communicable diseases included 2 cases of impetigo,
1 case of tonsilitis,
1 „ ringworm,
1 ,, chicken-pox, and
15 cases not defined.
MENTAL CONDITIONS.
42 children were classified as mentally sub-r.ormal, and 10 as mentally
defective.
