In view of the necessity of providing one or more new schools
in the immediate future, I would like to emphasize the desirability
of giving due weight to the following general principles:—
1. The central halls and classrooms should be so constructed as
to allow of free perflation instead of permitting the classrooms to
ventilate into the central halls, as is at present the rule in Crovdon
schools.
2. Further consideration of the adaptability of an impervious
floor, so as to allow of more thorough cleansing of the surface.
3. The choice of a type of desk that offers the least possible
obstacle to the sweeping and cleansing of the floors.
4. The substitution of suitably designed fixed cupboards in
place of the moveable furniture which at present provides opportunities
for the lodgment of dust.
5. The provision of adequate French windows in the central
halls, so that the greatest possible amount of fresh air may be
obtained under suitable conditions of the weather.
6. The sanitary conveniences should be brought into closer
relation with the buildings, so that they might be under the more
direct supervision of the head teachers.
EQUIPMENT.
Little advance has been made in the re-desking of the older
schools. As previously pointed out, the existing desks are in many
instances unsuitable, and do not allow of adjustment to the needs
of the children. Failing any considerable expenditure, I would urge
the importance of providing say 20 per cent. of single adjustable
desks at those schools where the existing furniture is most unsuitable.
The provision of, say, 5 per cent. of single adjustable desks should be
regarded as a necessity in new schools.
SANITARY CONVENIENCES.
These are periodically inspected. The thirty-three schools in
the borough are provided with:—
48 ranges of automatically flushed troughs.
8 ranges of automatically flushed separate closet pans.
39 ranges of wash-down closets with separate flushing
cisterns to each closet.
