County Borough of Croydon.
REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.
For the Year 1910.
A.—VITAL STATISTICS.
THE POPULATION at the Census of 1891 was 102,625, and had
ncreased at the Census of 1901 to 133,895.
The population at the middle of 1910, according to the estimate
of the Registrar-General, was 164,485.
The number of inhabited houses cannot be ascertained with
accuracy. At the last Census, in April, 1901, it was 25,726, while
1,354 houses were empty at that date. From this date until June
30th, 1910, 9893 houses have been passed by the Borough Engineer
as fit for occupation. The total number of inhabitable houses has,
therefore, been increased to that extent. It is, however, a matter
of common knowledge that the number of vacant houses in Croydon
was larger than at the time of the census, being about 10 per cent.,
as compared with about 5 per cent, in 1901,and 10 per cent, in 1909.
Taking this into consideration it is probable that the number of
inhabited houses in June. 1910, was about 33,276. If the population
per house remained the same as in 1901, this would have given
a total population of 173,035, but from the preliminary census
figures (or 1911 it is clear that the actual population in June, 1910
was 166,884. This figure has been used for calculating the
general death rates in this report. The true ward population
cannot yet be ascertained, and the estimates are based on the
census of 1901.
THE AREA of the Borough is 9,012 acres, and the density of the
population 18.8 per acre
