This shows an increase of 9,356 in the number of
houses occupied during the last 26 years, and in nearly
every parish the supply is unequal to the demand.

It will be seen from this table that great activity in
building has taken place at Mitcham with 679 new
houses, Merton with 479, and Coulsdon withl31.
In the District generally the average number of
parsons occupying each house in 1891 was 5.4, but at
the census in 1901 it was found to have fallen to 4.8,
while for 1907 it is estimated at 5.0.
The average number of persons per inhabited house
remains as a general rule fairly constant for each locality,
