The average annual death-rate during the preceding ten
years was 12.3 per 1,000 living. The previous highest rate
occurred in 1893, when it was 14.5 per 1,000, and the lowest in
1894, when it was 10.6.
The death-rate for England and Wales in 1896 was 17T per
1,000, as compared with an average of 18.8 per 1,000 during the
ten preceding years.
The distribution of the deaths of 1896 in the District is
shown in the following table, from which it appears that in the
individual parishes the death-rate per 1,000 varied from 5.5 in
Morden, and 6.6 in Beddington, to 16'7 in Sanderstead, and 17.9
in Mitcham.
