2. BIRTHS AND DEATHS, BIRTH-RATES AND
DEATH-RATES.
During the last six months of the year, 367 Births
were registered, of which 188 were males and 171 were
females; 8 of the births were illegitimate, 4 of each sex,
or 2 per cent, of the total births.
The birth-rate for the whole district was at the
annual rate of 26.5 per thousand persons living.

The average birth-rate for the whole of England and
Wales for the ten years, 1881 to 1890, was 32.5, and
4 per cent. of the births were illegitimate.
The Deaths registered throughout the district during
the same period numbered 321, of which 136 occurred in
public institutions, and must be deducted. To the total
185 thus left, must be added, however, 21 deaths of persons
belonging to the district who died beyond its
boundaries, giving a corrected total of 206 deaths. This
number of deaths represents an annual death-rate of 14.9
per thousand of population at the middle of 1893.
