Births.
The 437 live births notified showed an increase of 43
compared with last year's figure. The birth rate per 1,000
of the population is 15.4 against 13.9 last year. The birth
rate for England and Wales was 15.0.
Deaths.
This year we recorded 220 deaths out of a population
of 28,460 representing a death rate of 7.7 against 8.06 in
1954. The death rate for England and Wales was 11.7.
Infant Deaths.
During the year 8 infants died before reaching the age
of one year. There were 4 in 1954.
Rate of Infant Deaths under one year per 1,000 live
births was 18.3 as against 10.1 last year. That of England
and Wales was 24.9.
