Births.
The 394 live births notified showed a decrease of 13
compared with last year's figure. The birth rate per 1,000
of the population is 13.9 against 14.6 last year. The birth
rate for England and Wales was 15.2.
Deaths.
This year we recorded 227 deaths out of a population
of 28,150 representing a death rate of 8.06 against 9.8 in
1953. The death rate for England and Wales was 11.3.
Infant Deaths.
During the year 4 infants died before reaching the age
of one year There were 10 in 1953.
Rate of Infant Deaths under one year per 1,000 live
births was 10.1 as against 24.5 last year. That of England
and Wales was 25.5.
