The 492 live births notified showed a decrease of
9 compared with last year's figure. The birth rate per
1,000 of the population is 17.9 as against 18.4 last year.

Deaths.
This year we recorded 2.21 deaths out of a population
of 27,520, representing a death rate of 8.03 against
7.5 in 1948. The death rate for England and Wales was
11.7.
Infants Deaths.
During the year 13 infants died before reaching
the age of one year.
Rate of Infant Deaths under one year per 1,000 live
births was 26.4 as against 19.9 last year. That of England
and Wales was 32.
