TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE COULSDON
AND PURLEY URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for the year
1961 which has been prepared in accordance with Ministry of
Health Circular 1/62.
The health of the District remains good and the vital statistics
compare favourably with those of the country as a whole.
No case of poliomyelitis occurred. Fourth injections of Salk
vaccine were given to 6,574 children of primary school age in addition
to the routine vaccination programme. Salk vaccine has one
disadvantage as I reported last year. It does not prevent children
from becoming carriers and I am very pleased, therefore, that oral
vaccine is now available. Not only is it as effective as the Salk
vaccine in protecting the individual but it also prevents the carrier
state.
A new section on bronchitis has been added this year.
Bronchitis is not among the commonest causes of death, but it
causes a great deal of ill health in its chronic form. It is preventable
and any action that can be taken with this in view is well
worth while.
In conclusion I should like to thank the Chairman and
Members of the Public Health Committee for their continued
support and the staff for their keen co-operation during the year.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J. B. MORWOOD
Medical Officer of Health.
