MATERNAL MORTALITY
After one maternal death having occurred in each of the last
three years it is very pleasing to report a clear year.

per 1,000 live and still births.
INFANT MORTALITY
During 1960 there were 20 deaths among children under one
year of age as compared with 19 last year and an average of 16

births, compared with an average of 17.1 for the previous five years.
The rate in 1960 was the highest recorded since 1955.
The infant mortality rate for England and Wales was 21.7.
The 14 babies dying in the first month correspond with a neonatal
rate of 13.2 (i.e. deaths in the first month per 1,000 live
births) whereas the average for the past five years was 13.
The 13 babies dying in the first week correspond with an early
neo-natal rate of 12.2.
During the year 11 premature babies were notified as being
born at home and 36 in institutions. Of the latter 9 died, 8 within
