BIRTHS.
During the year 1958, 980 births were registered as occurring
in the District, of which 498 were male and 482 female, compared
with 957 in 1957. It will be seen by reference to the preceding
table that this is equal to an annual birth rate of 14.3 per 1,000
population, as compared with 14.1 in 1957.
If this rate is corrected in accordance with the RegistrarGeneral's
assessment of the atypical constitution of the population
it becomes 15.8 and this is comparable with the birth rates for
England and Wales which was 16.4.
Illegitimacy:—In 1958, of the births registered, 32 were illegitimate
(10 males and 22 females), this being 13 more than in the
preceding year.
Stillbirths.—The number of stillbirths registered during 1958
was 13 (7 males and 6 females), which is 5 more than last year.
None of the stillbirths was in respect of an illegitimate child. The
local stillbirth rate was 13.0 per thousand live and still births.
