Food & Drug Samples.
During the year a total of 168 samples of food and drugs,
including 66 milk samples, were purchased for the purpose of
analysis by the Public Analyst.
The milk samples, with one exception, were of good quality,
and only two adverse reports were received on the remaining
samples. Particulars of the unsatisfactory samples are as
follows :—
Cream Doughnuts—Although this article was sold as a cream
doughnut, the filling consisted of imitation cream. A warning
letter was sent to the vendor concerned.
Milk.—A sample of farm bottled Channel Islands milk contained
only 3.85% milk fat instead of the minimum 4% required
by The Milk & Dairies (Channel Islands and South Devon
Milk) Regulations 1956.
An examination of the producer's records of sampling
carried out by the Milk Marketing Board and the results of
weekly control samples taken by the retailing company,
suggested that this adverse report was an isolated occurrence
due probably to faulty mixing.
A warning letter was sent to the producer.
Marzipan Slices.—This was a sample of flour confectionery, the
marzipan coating of which contained not more than 12 per
cent of ground almonds. The Public Analyst is of the opinion
that a reasonable minimum ground almond content for marzipan
is 25 per cent.
The vendor and maker of this product was a local baker
and it was ascertained that he was using a proprietary brand
of almond paste having insufficient almond content to justify
the use of the term "marzipan". A warning letter was sent
to the baker concerned who sought the advice of the British
Baking Industries Research Association and his trade
organisation as to the use of such products in the future.
