PART 4
REPORT
OF
THE CHIEF PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTOR
1958
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE COULSDON
AND PURLEY URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the pleasure to submit herewith a report on the work
of the Public Health Inspectors for the year 1958.
It was a year during which considerable routine work of a
useful nature was carried out and the number of visits and inspections
made by the Inspectors compared favourably with recent
years.
Much time was taken up in the supervision of drainage repair
works, including, in particular, works carried out by the Council
in default or on behalf of owners.
Investigation of cases of infectious disease and control of contacts
was another essential duty that demanded and received much
effort and attention. On the other hand, rodent control work
tended to slacken somewhat, but it remains to be seen whether
this is merely transitory or an indication of more lasting success in
the war on these pests.
Following a very severe thunderstorm on the evening of the
5th September when almost 1½ inches of rain fell in half an hour,
flooding occurred in several parts of the District including, of
course, Purley Corner. This unwelcome event resulted in much
work for the department in the inspection of contaminated foodstuffs
and supervision of cleansing operations.
An event that gave considerable satisfaction to the staff was
the staging of an exhibition in the foyer of the Council Offices,
illustrating the work of the Public Health Inspector. The exhibit
was very well received and was the subject of favourable comment
in the press.
In conclusion I should like to welcome to the department Dr.
Morwood, our new Medical Officer of Health.
Reference should also be made to the resignation of Mrs.
Edmonston during the year, and 1 pay tribute to her long service.
To the remaining members of the staff I express my appreciation
and thanks for their assistance and co-operation during the
year.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
W. HAWORTH,
Chief Public Health Inspector.
