No processing of milk takes place within the district.
The number of automatic milk vending machines in the district
is four.

BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS.

Eighteen samples of designated milk were taken with the following results :—

Number passing phosphatase test15

Number passing methylene blue test17
Number giving unsatisfactory methylene blue result
Number passing the turbidity test (sterilised)1
Number failing turbidity test (sterilised)

Eighteen samples of milk were submitted for chemical
examination, all of which proved satisfactory.
ICE CREAM.
Twelve samples were taken during the year. Ten were placed
in Grade I, one in Grade II, and none in Grade III, and one in
Grade IV.
Investigations were made into the circumstances surrounding
the unsatisfactory sample, but sale of ice cream from this source
has ceased.
During the year, registration was granted for the manufacture
of "soft" ice cream in a local shop, and a large depot for vans on
which soft ice cream is manufactured and sold was opened.
PIGGERIES.
There are 12 piggeries in the district, indicating no change
from the previous year. The number of pigs kept is approximately
1,825.
One large piggery houses 1,000 animals, and two others 470
and 100 respectively. At all others relatively small numbers are
kept.
102 visits have been paid to these sties. In one case it was
necessary to require fairly extensive repairs and improvements.
These were not carried out until a Statutory Notice had been
served.
