Smoke Control Areas.
The main pre-occupation of the department in 1962 was the
detailed survey in connection with the making of a Smoke Control
Area in the Mottingham South Ward, together with all houses in
Oakdene Avenue, Chislehurst. This caused considerable disruption
of other duties and entailed a total of 3,185 visits during the
year in addition to some made in the latter part of 1961, and the
completion of the survey in the early part of 1963. These visits
are not a routine matter. Enquiries have to be made as to the
amount of fuel used, a detailed examination made of the appliances
installed and the purpose of Smoke Control Areas explained to
the occupiers.
The Order will be made in 1963 and it is hoped confirmation
by the Minister will be forthcoming so that the majority of adaptations
necessary may be carried out in the latter part of that year.
The survey revealed that the following works would be
necessary :—
