Although Chislehurst and Sidcup may well be included in the
"Greater London" area, the fact will remain that it contains farm
lands, orchards and woods, amongst the finest in the County of
Kent. These stretch along the eastern edge of the district and
are included within the Meropolitan Green Belt, which the Council
has striven to maintain intact.
On the southern boundary of the district, lie the large well
wooded commons of St. Paul's Cray and Chislehurst, where again
the illusion of unspoilt countryside can be obtained. On the
London boundary, are open areas of playing fields.
These are great assets to the district and to the health of its
inhabitants. These open spaces are augmented by over 500 acres
of allotments, parks and gardens, directly maintained by the Council.
Many of these parks contain sports grounds for football,
cricket, tennis and other organised sports, together with children's
playgrounds. The latest addition to the last mentioned is at Belmont
Lane open space, whilst renewals of equipment have been
made at others.
In this connection, Games Wardens are installed at three parks
during the schools summer holidays and their worth and popularity
has again been proved.
The Council are seeking always to improve their open spaces.
The Sports Pavilion and Flat at Hoblingwell Wood were completed
during the year and further paving works and footpaths are to be
laid. Access to the delightful "Riverside Walk" along the Cray
at North Cray has been made easier by the construction of a path.
