BIRTHS.
1,357 live births appertaining to the area were registered during
1962, of which 696 were males and 661 females. 1,307 of these
births were legitimate and 50 illegitimate. The crude birth rate
for the Urban District was 15.3 per 1,000 total population, which
is an increase of 0.6 over the rate for the previous year. The
adjusted rate for use when comparing one area with another was
15.0.
The rate for England and Wales as a whole was 18.0.
The illegitimate birth rate was 37.7 per 1,000 live and still
births, or 3.7% of the total live births. Of the 50 illegitimate live
births, 27 were males and 23 females.
There were three more illegitimate live births in 1962 than in
1961.
21 stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 15.2 per 1,000
live and still births, and 0.2 per 1,000 total population. 10 of
the stillbirths were males and 11 females.
The stillbirth rate for England and Wales as a whole was 18.1
per 1,000 total births.
