SHOPS ACT, 1950.
The number of shops within the meaning of the Act, existing
at the 31st December, 1960, was 857. They are situated as
follow:—
Lamorbey and Blackfen 262
Sidcup and Footscray 280
North Cray and St. Paul's Cray 114
Chislehurst and Mottingham 201
857
The erection of a few new premises was largely counter-balanced
by closing of older shops, at least pending reconstruction.
Under present conditions, there is comparatively little incentive
for shops to remain open later in the evening or on the half day
closing, or on Sundays, when not permitted by the Shops Act. In
the case of a few contraventions warnings have been issued.
There are no Closing Orders (in respect of the early closing
day) operative in the district. A tendency has been noticed for a
few shops to close on an afternoon other than that usual in the
particular vicinity. This does not constitute an offence, although
there are conditions attached to the practice. Generally, closing
days are as follow:—
Wednesday—St. Paul's Cray Estate (except Leith Hill), Chislehurst,
The Oval, Lamorbey.
Thursday—Sidcup area (other than above)
North Cray,
Mottingham.
Visits and observations in connection with the Shops Act totalled 403, and the following infringements have been dealt with.
