The natural increase of population, measured by excess of
births over deaths was 625.
Next year, being a Census year, we should receive an accurate
figure of the population and many other interesting pieces of information.
BIRTHS.
1,327 live births were registered during the year, as compared
with 1,271 in 1959.
The birth rate for 1960 was 14.8 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate for comparison with other areas being 14.3.
Of the births registered, 698 were males and 629 females.
The rate of 14.8 is .5 higher than that for the year 1959, but
is well below the figure of 17.1 which is the rate for England
and Wales as a whole.
3.8% of the total number of live births were illegitimate, 51
such births being registered, 29 males and 22 females.
31 stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 0.35 per 1,000
estimated total population, and 22.8 per 1,000 total live and still
births. 14 of the stillbirths were males and 17 females.
DEATHS.
702 deaths appertaining to the Urban District were registered
during 1960, giving a Death Rate of 7.8 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate for use when comparing one area with another
is 10.1. The rate for England and Wales as a whole is 11.5.
Of the deaths registered, 334 were males and 368 females.
