SLUM CLEARANCE.
The Clearance Area comprising 1—12 School Cottages,
declared in 1958, has not yet been vacated, but it is hoped that the
tenants will soon be rehoused.
During 1959 the following formal action was taken:—
Church Cottage, Church Road, Footscray (in the ownership of
the Council), was declared unfit and subsequently demolished.
Three first-floor flats above shops known as Nos. 7 and 9 Cray
Road, Footscray, were closed by agreement with the owner.
No. 5 Cray Road, Footscray (closed in 1957), was found to be
in a dangerous condition and a Demolition Order was substituted.
No. 68 Corbylands Road, Sidcup, found to be unfit and not
repairable at a reasonable cost, was closed.
HOUSING ACT, 1949.
During the year 113 schemes were submitted, of which 72 were
approved, including one conversion scheme. Of those approved
13 were in respect of standard grants.
Improvements effected were mainly for the provision of
bathrooms and hot water systems. The total cost of the works
involved amounted to £21,373.
RENT ACT, 1957.
CERTIFICATES OF DISREPAIR.
There has been a very considerable decrease in the number of
premises for which Certificates under the Rent Act have been
supplied.
Eighty-nine were dealt with in the last four months of 1957
when the Act came into force. In the whole of 1958, the
corresponding figure was 72, whilst in the current year the number
fell to 27. In addition to this last mentioned number, cancellations
of Certificates of Disrepair and other statutory documents in
connection with previous applications, continued to be dealt with.
